Paslode’s New CF-325 Cordless Framing Nailer
November 30, 2008
HOT off the Press: The Paslode® cordless nailing story goes back more than two decades. During that time, the company has repeatedly earned accolades from end users, trade groups, industry press and others for its innovative cordless nailers and staplers. Last year, one respected industry publisher named Paslode’s cordless 30-degree framer “Best Overall Choice” in its end-of-year tool guide issue because of the tool’s outstanding maneuverability, performance and convenience....
GMC is in Receivership
November 30, 2008
As of a few hours ago, KordaMentha were appointed receivers and managers of GMC, which obviously also includes Triton (rumours of its recent sale were unfounded). They are going to sell it as a going concern (if there is any buyers). So we watch and wait to see what is next. Safety in Community Workshops
November 30, 2008
I had an interesting experience recently, although not one that I’d want to repeat. Luckily (and it was pure luck) there were no injuries from the day, but it did serve to highlight some points. The workshop was one where I had the responsibility of the people using it, and some of the things I saw and had to react to really drove home the fact that many, many injuries (in fact most) in the home or community workshop are operator error. The fact that I had theoretical responsibility for...

Lumberjocks Pen Swap Round 3
November 30, 2008
First of all if you don’t know what Lumberjocks is then stop reading this and immediately click on the link and sign up to be a member on this Facebook for woodworkers site. This is an amazing community full to inspiration and comraderie and a great addition to any woodworker’s toolbox. OK that said, the Lumberjock pen swap is in the middle of round 3 and I was visited by the pen swap fairy this past Friday. I came home from a trip up to Lancaster county, PA to find a mysterious box...
Quick Poll
November 30, 2008
Now that we are in to holiday season, I’m sure visions of giving - and receiving - gifts are dancing in your head. While we would love to believe that those special people in our lives know exactly what they should give us, there are plenty of spouses, siblings, parents and other loving people who don’t have the smallest clue of what to get us… even though we could walk into a Woodcraft store and drop a small fortune on tools. While many of us would love the opportunity to stroll...
The Jig Drawer
November 30, 2008
Strangely, I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned my “Jig Drawer” before. I was using it over the weekend when it occured to me that it may never have actually been referred to here. I have a Jig Drawer. No, it isn’t where I store my various jigs, but where I store the components that may be useful in jig construction. The Jig Drawer It is full of useful and interesting bits and pieces, many as it happens from Professional Woodworkers Supplies. There are knobs, hold downs,...
11/30/08 - Woodworking Tips And Tidbits
November 30, 2008
1. When using a honing guide to sharpen your plane blades place a couple of earth magnets on the blade. The metal particles will then collect on top of the blade aiding sharpening and easing cleanup. When finished remove the magnets from the blade over the trash. 2. To drill a perfect sized pilot hole for a finish nail, just clip the head off a same size finish nail and use it to drill the hole. 3. To glue wood together temporarily make a paper joint with a sheet of paper (brown paper bag works best!)...
Thanksgiving weekend carving.
November 30, 2008
Finished the 7 seats I had for today, Still have two more for tomorrow. We we forced to buy some elongated seats from a place we usually don't visit. but luckily, they had them. So from now on...NO MORE ELONGATED SEATS! It's simply a logistical issue we don't want to deal with anymore. Until I actually make my own, that is. Then I can take a more control on how they are assembled. Well, it is late here so I'll keep this post short. Read More →
Used Hand Planes part 3: your arsenal
November 30, 2008
Note: I realize this series is about buying used planes, but it was easier to post pics of new Lie Neilson planes for obvious reasons. Not that I have anything against buying a new plane, but this series was really about finding quality used planes to help get the average woodworker started in hand plane use without a big financial burden. Besides, it's the holiday season and I thought you all could use a little hand plane porn.I didn't plan to get into this side of buying hand planes, but the subject...
Why Are British Mid-19th Century Tools So Much Prettier…
November 29, 2008
Why are mid-19th century British tools so much prettier than North American ones of the same era? I have been asking this question for months wherever I can around the web and I haven’t received a qualified answer yet. When you don’t get an answer to a question, you tend to develop your own, and that is exactly what I have done here. If you agree - good. If you don’t agree - even better, but tell me why. The one thing I hope you won’t do, however, is take offense. First on the agenda is...
Fort Hunter
November 29, 2008
In a nearly insurmountable effort to distance ourselves from the sugar-laden Thanksgiving day leftovers (namely apple and cherry pies), we decided to tour the grounds and mansion at Fort Hunter. This fertile land nestled between Blue Mountain and the Susquehanna River was originally occupied by the Susquehannock and Lenape Indian tribes. In the 18th c., British settlers built a chain of forts throughout Pennsylvania, among which Fort Hunter, built in 1755 to protect settlers from Indian attacks, was...
A Big Rut for the New Wagon Vise
November 29, 2008
This weekend I'm installing the Benchcrafted.com wagon vise hardware on my Roubo-style workbench. But before I could pull my old prototype wagon vise hardware off the bench, I had one more task for it to perform: Making the new end cap for the new wagon vise. The new end cap on my benchtop has to be beefier than my original end cap, so I had to glue up some 8/4 maple into a slab about 3" thick. I planed it all flat...

Time to Change Gears
November 29, 2008
Now that the basement is finally finished with floor and all drywall in place I can change gears back to old projects and start new ones. Currently on the front burner is to clean up the shop and get it organized. I also need to find items that I am no longer using or have duplicates of and sell them off. These items will go up on Woodnet then eBay. Part of the organization process is to create a more streamlined process of construction for my standard cases.Special thanks goes out to Shannon Rogers...

Tossin’ the Tannenbaum
November 29, 2008
We humans do not have a great track record of "Thinking Green."I am as guilty as anyone. In the years I have spent as an engineer designing stuff, the eventual retirement and disposal of the product was at most an afterthought. I just wanted the widget to look fabulous and perform flawlessly. I seldom cared how my brainchild spent the eventual eternity of its days in the landfill.Well, folks, let's stop the insanity here....today. Since this is the time when so many of our readers start to think...
Happy Thanksgiving!
November 29, 2008
Happy thanksgiving everyone! Yesterday was spent with the family so I didn't get to do much. I'm now behind 15 seats! I was able to secure 3 elongated in Grand Rapids yesterday, But That was it. I still have to find 2 more... and then all the standard seats to boot. Anyway, I carved up 8 tonight. Hopefully, We Will continue to be swamped like this through Christmas and beyond. Got lots of catching up to do. So I might be a little sporadic with the blog entries in the future. Read More →
I’m Cute Too, Frank
November 28, 2008
During the entire course of the Woodworking in America conference I never engaged steel to wood. I never pushed a plane, stroked a saw, or picked up a chisel. The only tools I wielded were cameras. On Saturday morning, before I became Roy Underhill's personal photographer and cleaning assistant, I had wanted to get my photo taken with Frank Klausz. So after his class was over, I approached him and asked if he would mind posing with me.I assumed I needed to get Frank's permission before I went snapping...

3D Drawing Boards
November 28, 2008
At a number of Working with Wood Shows, I’ve seen in passing a display for 3D Drawing Boards. At the time, I hadn’t really perceived the benefit of the system, especially since I have had a fair few years of technical drawing and draughting experience, and the boards seemed to be pitched at people with little to no drawing experience. I have since had a chance to actually have a good look (and use) the system, and I’ve gone from being somewhat apathetic, to being a definite fan. That...

Adam King’s post on studio furniture
November 28, 2008
Warning: rant ahead! This is a great post by Adam King on a topic I love to discuss. (Look forward to a Furniture I Love post on Adam's work soon.) I'm amazed at how many people don't realize that there are people actually making furniture by hand. It seems like they think it magically shows up at Target or Crate & Barrel and that's all that is available. Part of what furniture makers need to do is educate consumers that handmade furniture exists in the first place and that it is worth purchasing....

Rocking Chair University Week - Day 5
November 28, 2008
Today was both a happy day and a sad day. Happy, because we would finish the chair to the point that we had set out to do four days ago and sad, of course, because it was my last day here at Rocking Chair University. The week had gone so fast, it seemed that I had just arrived! The day started with a special treat. In addition to rocking chairs Hal has made several guitars and harps. Here he is playing a few songs on the ‘Reso Nuevo’ resophonic guitar (dobro) that he built: He doesn’t...
